Voyageur Storytelling's Interactive Composition Project
Interactive Composition (Creation of Stories)
Voyageur Storytelling will launch this project in the Fall of 2007.
We perform stories, in various styles. Some of these stories we compose ourselves. We use the term "compose" instead of "write" because we are not trying to create literature. We enjoy literature very much; we cannot in fact imagine life without it, but our artistic business is "performature."
When we have composed a story we try it out in our concerts. Sometimes audiences will like it, sometimes not, and we can feel the difference. Such feedback is immensely valuable, and contributes hugely to the evolution of the story, which will often go through many rounds of polishing and re-performance before it settles into final shape, for better or worse. But this feedback is seldom explicit, and we must guess at the changes required.
We would like to use the internet to recruit an "audience" that will help us compose. The general idea would be to publish drafts (written or recorded) on the internet, and solicit feedback by e-mail, perhaps in conjunction with a forum so that readers and listeners can themselves interact.
We will probably charge a nominal subscription fee for participation. We realize that seems perverse, but the internet is such a public medium that simply to throw the project open may wreck it. We will embrace the resulting responsibility, which is to make the experience worthwhile.
We are working on a Creation story. What could be more suitable for an experiment? We will set up the Mark I version of this project in the Fall. In the meantime we invite your comments and suggestions for this idea. Please write us at mail@voyageurstorytelling.ca
